Kleinveldt and Company awarded Semi-Pro contracts at Western Province

CAPE TOWN. – The incentive of semi-professional contracts and the privilege of standing in the queue to challenge for a place in the most dominant South African franchise of the past five years will motivate Matthew Kleinveldt, Zubayr Hamza and their six colleagues.

The eight players received semi-professional contracts at Western Province for the 2015/2016-season.

Apart from Kleinveldt and Hamza, Pieter Malan, Aviwe Mgijima, Lesiba Ngoepe, Travis Miller, George Linde and Mpilo Njoloza were also rewarded semi-professional contracts.

Kleinveldt scored 669 runs in the 2014/2015-season, and prospered in his maiden first-class game for the Cape Cobras by striking a composed 97 as opener against the Sunfoil Dolphins.

The 19-year old Hamza excelled, compiling a stylish 580 runs in the Sunfoil Cup Three-day competition at an average of 58.

Malan also enjoyed some memorable success for Western Province. He assembled 694 runs and pressed briefly for a more permanent position in the Cape Cobras top-order.

The contracted bowlers and all-rounders have the abilities to stake a claim for higher honours at Newlands.

Aviwe Mgijima captured 16 wickets and scored 201 runs at an average of 40.20 for Western Province last season.

Travis Miller and George Linde have made debuts for the Cape Cobras and both have taken five-wicket hauls for the senior franchise team.

Ultimately, consistent excellence and match-winning performances would be required to propel the semi-professionals firmly into the hearts and minds of the Cape Cobras selectors.

Ngoepe showed glimpses of his quality in the 2014/2015-season. Yet, he would want to convert those moments into sessions and centuries to exert more pressure on the incumbents at the Cape Cobras.

Newlands Cricket High School teenagers make a breath-taking start

CAPE TOWN. – An extraordinary start which even would have left Usain Bolt trailing if that was a 100-metre sprint is one way to describe the first 100 days of the newly established Newlands Cricket High school.

Shaheed Shaik, co-founder of the school with Nabeal Dien, the chief executive officer of the Western Province Cricket Association, and Clinton Ravens, the cricket master of the school, said the u.14-team of the new institution won 34 of their 35 games in the first quarter.

The u.15-team lost six games, but was victorious in 29 of their 35 clashes.

One of the premier goals of Shaik and the Newlands Cricket High School is to produce 50 black African cricket stars during the next five years.

Of the premier intake of 22 learners and cricketers in 2015 (grade eight and nine), eight players are black Africans.

And Shaik is enormously proud of the major roles the African players have fulfilled in the first season.

The bowler Siya Plaatjie boasts more than 50 scalps in his first season for the school, while Tembani Ngicizela is comfortably the fastest bowler on view.

Shaik is passionate about cricket. Not only did he captain Boland during the 1980’s. He was also at the helm as manager/coach when the Western Province Cricket Club’s u.13-team won the Feedem Pitseng knockout-cup-competition in the Western Cape in 2013 and 2014.

About 80 u.13-teams participated in this prestigious event.

His philosophy was to make the young players understand their distinct roles in the team. The bowlers also bolstered their game plan by constantly taking wickets in the 15-over-a-team contest.

The team also had contingency plans in case they lose constant wickets.

Shaik also founded three private schools in Cape Town.

Part of his approach was to establish a drug-monitoring program which became such a success recipe that government implemented it as a best practice at schools nationally.

Developing leaders, nurturing good people, and instilling self-belief in the minds and hearts of the players are part of Shaik’s philosophy.

He said many of the black players in the school have not left the Western Cape. Taking them on tours to Mossel Bay, Oudtshoorn and Potchefstroom were eye-openers to them.

Strengthening their minds so that they would shrug off feelings of inferiority and start believing they can compete against all-comers, were very important. But he is confident has succeeded in doing that, added Shaik.

One of the highlights of his season was the performance by the u.14-team against arguably the u.14-champion team in the region, Rondebosch Boys High.

The Newlands-based team restricted Rondebosch to 107 for nine after the former had scored 128 for nine.

If the umpire did answer a vociferous appeal for caught behind (the batsman nicked it), the Newlands Cricket High school would have won.

Instead, Rondebosch hung on dourly for a draw.

But it was the level of play by the young Newlands cricketers that excited him, said Shaik.

Clinton Ravens, a former Coke-week coach of Western Province and also an assistant-coach of the WP Cubs team, was up-beat about the quality of the players.

He said although the cricketers train about eight hours in winter and spend around 20 hours a week in the summer practicing their cricket skills, the focus of the first term was more on discipline in the first quarter.

Correcting technical hiccups or faults in the bowling or batting has hardly received any attention. He will address this in the winter. Therefore, much can still be done to raise the standards of the very talented players.

Shaik says one of the challenges during the next five years is to raise funds to accommodate black African cricketers from disadvantaged communities. Many of them don’t have the funds to pay for their schooling and cricket tutelage.

Judging from the amazing standards attained by the cricketers in their first 100 days at Newlands, word might spread quickly that this is an enormous investment in South Africa’s future cricketing wealth.

WESTERN PROVINCE ASSOCIATION (WPCA) as well as CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) has heard with sadness of the passing of former player and administrator, Bert Erickson, last night.

Mr. Erickson, who represented the South African Coloured Cricket Association (SACCA) during his playing days, was last year one of the first 10 recipients of the CSA Heritage Blazers that honour those players who represented the 10 different national associations prior to unity.

As an administrator his name was synonymous with the Avendale Cricket Club of which he was chairman for many years.

“On behalf of the Cricket South Africa Family I extend our deepest condolences to his family, his many friends and his cricketing colleagues,” commented CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat.

WPCA Chief Executive, Nabeal Dien said, “Bert was an outstanding administrator that will be sorely missed and he made great contribution to the game of cricket. Our deepest condolences to the Erickson family and Avendale Cricket Club.”

Funeral arrangements to follow.

WPCA pays tribute to Coetie Neethling

WESTERN PROVINCE CRICKET ASSOCIATION (WPCA) has heard with sadness of the passing of John ‘Coetie’ Neethling last night at the age of 82.

Neethling was one of many outstanding all-rounders to come out of the ranks of the South African Cricket Board of Control (SACBOC) in the 1950s. He represented SACBOC on the pioneer tour to East Africa and played in all three unofficial tests against Kenya and East Africa in the 1958-59 season.

It was his successes on this tour that brought him to the notice of the Colne club in the Lancashire League and they employed him for two years as their overseas professional in 1962 and 1963, where he scored 700 runs and took 150 wickets. His best performance was to score an unbeaten 50 and then take 9/45 against Church. He would have had all 10 but for the fact that the opposition professional, the great West Indies fast bowler, Wes Hall, was dropped on the boundary.

He was a star performer for the SA Coloured Cricket Association (SACCA) side in the late 1950s and later for the Western Province Board team once SACBOC had unified all the different ethnic bodies into one home.

After 20 years of provincial cricket, Neethling retired at the age of 37. He continued playing cricket at club level for Elsies River Cricket Club for another nine years, and in later years he served on one of W.PC.A’s selection committees.

On behalf of the WPCA Family I extend deepest sympathy to his family, his friends and his sporting colleague
s,” commented WPCA Chief Executive Nabeal Dien.

Residents of Philippi, Lansdowne, Wynberg and Gugulethu were overwhelmed by the Cape Cobras, Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) and Shoprite South Africa’s gesture to share the warmth by providing 67 blankets, 250 cups of vegetable soup and bread to needy and homeless people in these suburbs on Thursday.
The Cobras and WPCA joined forces with Shoprite South Africa to assist in their winter campaign #actsofwarmth as part of the Mandela Day celebrations.

“It was an overwhelming success and there were several moments which left the eight Cape Cobras-players, the staff at WPCA and the Shoprite-team with a collective lump in the throat,” said Nabeal Dien, chief executive officer of the WPCA and the Cape Cobras.

“The spontaneous joy with which our outreach was received, touched us.

“The magnitude of the need in some settlements also left an indelible mark on us. We realized that some of the homeless were without shoes or even warm clothing. Making a small difference to the lives of the people is deeply satisfying and gratifying,” Dien added.

“Devoting 67 minutes (and more) of our time to acts of kindness in commemoration of Mandela Day is a heart-warming initiative to help people who are poverty-stricken and in need of kindness and physical support,” added Dien.

The Cape Cobras coach, Paul Adams, the captain, Justin Ontong and senior players including Justin Kemp, Omphile Ramela and Beuran Hendricks, were part of the initiative to hand over blankets, soup and bread on Thursday.

“There was one moment that I won’t forget:  Justin Kemp wrapping a blanket around the shoulders of a man who was without a warm jacket. It was moving,” said Jasmiena Davids, marketing manager of the WPCA.

The Cobras were brand ambassadors for the Nelson Mandela Foundation in 2014 and displayed the 46664 on their arms and chests when playing at the Champions League T20 in India.

WPCA and the Cape Cobras have championed and supported several causes benefiting the poor, needy and vulnerable in society in the past.

WPCA mourns loss of SA icons Van Oordt and Rice

CAPE TOWN. – Western Cape and South African cricket mourned the loss of Nickfurt van Oordt (69), a former long-serving administrator of Western Province, and one of South Africa’s finest all-rounders of the 1970’s and 1980’s, Clive Rice.

Van Oordt, a former active vice-rector, senior director of human resources and registrar of student affairs at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, was an administrative icon of Western Province cricket for several decades.

Nabeal Dien, chief executive officer of the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA), paid tribute to Van Oordt, saying he was an excellent administrator whose lengthy and dedicated association with the game spanned more than four decades.

“Nick’s administrative contributions will be remembered with fondness and gratitude,” said Dien.

Rice past away at the age of 66 on Tuesday after a long battle with a brain tumour.

He captained South Africa at the age of 42 on their first post-isolation limited overs tour of India in 1991.

Rice was a stalwart of Transvaal, Natal and Nottinghamshire, striking 26 331 first-class runs at an average of 40.95 and also captured 930 wicket at 22.49 apiece before his retirement in 1994.

“He was the captain of the all-conquering Mean Machine of Transvaal and was a hard-hitting batsman and excellent seam bowler and a world-class all-rounder over almost two decades,” said Dien. “Our sincere condolences go to his friends and family,” said Dien.

Van Oordt joined Tigers (now Tygerburg) in 1963, served as secretary from 1964 and later became president and life president. He also captained the first team.

Van Oordt was a senior member of the Western Province Cricket Board executive committee as match and registration secretary. He served WP at the South African Cricket Board. An architect of unity, he participated in talks at provincial and national level and also student cricket.

He also served as first national tournament coordinator of student cricket after unity and as manager of the first national tertiary student team that played against the Indian team in 1991/1992.

“He was one of the best administrators in the South African Cricket Board-era of Western Province, recalled Angelo Carolissen, vice-chairman of Western Cape Cricket and president of the Boland Cricket Union.

He was a calm and reassuring presence during stormy debates, added Carolissen.

Beresford Williams, chairman of Western Cape Cricket and president of the WPCA, said Western Province honoured Van Oordt in 2013 with a presidential award to salute his monumental contribution to the game.

The death of Van Oordt was a huge blow for cricket. He served the game with dedication, pride and passion. The Van Oordt-family was an icon of broader community development.

Van Oordt was a stalwart of non-racialism, he added.

Omar Henry, a former chairman of the national selectors, said Western Province and Transvaal fought lengthy tussles in three-day games over many years when Rice was at the helm of the Mean Machine,

He was a hard-hitting batsman and as a bowler, he would be uncompromising and possessed a very sharp bouncer, He could hurl missiles at batsmen at 140 kilometres per hour or more, and was one of the finest all-rounders in South African cricket for more than two decades, Henry added.

CAPE TOWN. – The re-election of Beresford Williams, an unwavering commitment to transformation, sustainable growth and the importance of the redevelopment of Newlands were features of the annual general meeting of the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) on Wednesday.

Nabeal Dien, the chief executive officer of the Association, also said Newlands will host 18 international games over the next four years. It forms part of a new dispensation announced by Cricket South Africa (CSA) which is geared to maximise income generation by only allocating internationals to the main five stadiums in South Africa.

Williams, the president of the Association for the past four years, underlined the proactive incentives implemented by WPCA the past year in accelerating the empowerment of black African stars in the Western Cape.

These programs included the Langa cricket festival and the formation of the Newlands Cricket High School, which is a unique South African cricketing institution and has received rave reviews from Cricket South Africa (CSA).

He also applauded the efforts of the WPCA to erase Newlands’ debt in the next five years through the redevelopment model of the stadium that is geared towards that purpose, which will involve the transformation of suites to mixed-use facilities. The new redevelopment plan, when fully implemented, will potentially cost in the region of R450 million over the next five years.

Williams challenged the WPCA to capitalize on the Cape Cobras’ domestic on-field-dominance which saw them win 10 trophies the past seven trophies, and to “make Newlands the home of champions in every sphere.”

Dien committed himself to create a framework for non-racialism in Western Cape cricket by utilizing resources, capacity and human capital to ensure proper access and opportunities to all the communities under the jurisdiction of the WPCA.

At the annual general meeting, advocate Nicholas Kock was elected vice-president.

Four non-independent directors, Trevor Blake, Ashraf Burns, Fezile Mguqulwa and Albin Wagner were elected. The five independent directors of WPCA is Mustaq Brey, Itumeleng Langeni, Suliman Mohamed, Johannes van der Merwe and Lance Witten.

According to the treasurer’s report, WPCA has finished in the green in the 2014/2015-season, showing a profit of R340 013,00.

Faiek Davids overcomes Cape winter woes

FAIEK DAVIDS has found the perfect solution for his Western Province team not being able to practise outdoors in the Western Cape winter in preparation for the inaugural edition of the Africa T20 Cup.

“Most of the players are on the sub-continent at the moment,” commented the Western Province coach, “either with South Africa A in India or with the SA Emerging Squad in Sri Lanka. “I have spoken to all of them to make sure that they are sharpening their skills but it is far better for them to be involved in competitive international cricket than being back here at the moment.

“You can’t practise outdoors here until mid-September and, as luck would have it, our pool is the first in action in the first week of the month.

“Dane Vilas and Omphile Ramela are both coming off excellent innings for South Africa in their four-day Test matches while Zubayr Hamza and Lesiba Ngoepe were the leading runs scorers for the Emerging team in their first ODI.

“These players will return home on Monday week and should be at perfect pitch for our Pool A matches at Sahara Park Willowmoore which start four days later. As it is we only have one practice session when we get to Benoni.

“I only have three players in Cape Town at the moment and they are practising at the Bishops Indoor Centre to keep them ticking over.”

Davids acknowledged that Western Province were in a tough pool with Northerns, Zimbabwe and hosts Easterns.

“Fortunately we have a good contingent of senior players such as Vilas and Wayne Parnell and they have been round the block a few times and know exactly what to expect and the standard of play that will be required to keep winning.”

Western Province squad: Pieter Malan (capt), Dane Vilas, Omphile Ramela, Lesiba Ngoepe, Zubayr Hamza, Aviwe Mgijima, Wayne Parnell, George Linde, Dayyaan Galiem, Emmanuel Seberame, Dane Paterson, Travis Muller, Jack Newby

Support Staff: Faiek Davids (head coach), Dieter Swanepoel (fitness trainer), Paul Adams (franchise coach)

Cricket has truly transformed Sebareme's life

Tuesday, 25 August 2015

WHEN Emmanuel Sebareme plays an away match and stays in a hotel he cannot believe how his life has been transformed in such a space of time. The 19-year-old Western Province off-spinner left the war-torn nation of Rwanda only a few years ago with his parents on foot to seek a better living here in South Africa.

“We basically walked all the way from Rwanda. There were nights when it was very cold. I remember us leaving many things along the way because the journey was very long and we needed to travel light. We couldn’t carry many things with us,” Sebareme said. “When I stay in a hotel now for cricket I lie there and look up at the ceiling and thank the almighty for giving me the talent to play this great game. Without cricket I don’t know where I would be.”

With cricket not being a traditional sport in Rwanda, Sebareme was first introduced to the “gentleman’s game” on the streets of Steenberg on the Cape Flats where he started playing with a tennis ball. He later joined the Peninsula CC, but immediately realised there was something different with the game at the next level.

“It is actually a funny story. My friends and I played with a tennis ball in the road. But when I got to club cricket, the guys played with a red leather ball and it was quite hard,” he chuckled. “But it is here where I changed from bowling medium-fast to bowling spin. In fact, it wasn’t really spin; I just bowled slower and from a shorter run-up. The ball just happened to turn, and turn a lot in fact, and it is from here that people started noticing me and I got selected for the Western Province U-19 team that played in the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week last year.”

Sebareme’s star was now certainly on the rise and his performances were so impressive during the Week that he gained selection to the SA Schools XI. He had also caught the eye of the senior selectors at Newlands and earned a couple of caps for the Western Province semi-professional team, claiming a credible 2/25 on debut against Griqualand West at Newlands and the next step for the University of Western Cape economics student is the upcoming Africa T20 Cup.

“I can’t wait to play in the Africa T20 Cup. It is the biggest tournament of my career. I have been working really hard with our coach, Faiek Davids, during the winter. I am actually quite nervous because I am going to play against some Proteas, but the coach has worked on calming me down and giving me good game plans to execute,” said Sebareme.

Vilas, Ramela, Malan & Hamza to bat in top five for WP

CAPE TOWN. – Two players who have recently excelled in outdoor-cricket and are pressing for Cape Cobras selection, Pieter Malan and Zubayr Hamza, will bat amongst the top-five when Western Province start their quest for Africa T20 Cup-supremacy.

Malan recently hammered an unbeaten 82 and 114 in club cricket in England and will hope to extend that form to the Africa T20 Cup starting on Friday 4th September.

Faiek Davids, the Western Province coach, said he planned to use Lesiba Ngoepe, Malan, Omphile Ramela, Dane Vilas and Hamza in his top-five for the T20 Cup.

Vilas, senior player of the Cape Cobras, recently made his test debut for South Africa against Bangladesh.

Ramela hammered a century on debut for South Africa A after also concluding the Sunfoil Series competition in 2014/2015 with two centuries in his final three domestic four-day matches for the Cape Cobras.

Hamza was prolific for the South African Academy team in Sri Lanka and topped the averages in the one-day series against the Sri Lankan emerging team. He averaged 71.50 at an impressive strike-rate of 86.14.

Hamza made statistical headlines in the 2014/2015-season when he became the fourth-youngest South African player to score a double-century in a first-class game, against Namibia.

He did so at the age of 19 years and 113 years, putting him behind Johann Myburgh (17 years and 122 days), Graeme Pollock (19 years and 19 days) and Xenophon Balaskas (19 years and 86 days).

Davids said the South African left-arm swing bowler Wayne Parnell will fulfil the role of first all-rounder for the Western Province team at the Africa T20 Cup.

His ability to swing the ball both ways through the air at pace can make him a world-class bowler. He also has credentials as a hard-hitting batsman who has crafted at least two centuries in domestic limited-over matches.

If Parnell can reclaim his self-confidence and consistency, nothing prevents him from becoming a regular first-choice all-rounder for South Africa in limited-overs cricket, Davids said.

Davids added he would have loved to have his full squad available for a longer outdoor training period, but the fact that 11 of his 13 squad members are overseas, is a blessing in disguise, as they all gain cricketing exposure outdoors.

CAPE TOWN. – The Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA), one of South Africa’s pioneers of investing in the acceleration of black African stars, and Sport4kids have joined hands to assist six black African clubs with a senior and junior kit to boost the participation in the township clubs in the Western Cape.

Nyanga Cricket Club, Mandalay, Delft, Du Noon, Mfuleni and Philippi were the beneficiaries at a handover-ceremony on Thursday 17th September.

“We are indebted to Sport4kids and their commitment to assist disadvantaged clubs in this way. We believe that this can benefit the clubs and increase their numbers,” said Nabeal Dien, chief executive officer of the WPCA.

“The existence of the Newlands Cricket High School, our winter high-performance programs, the Langa Cricket Festival and our consistent endeavours to empower coaches and run the hubs programs, underline our investment in increasing the number of black African stars who play the beautiful game,” Dien added.

“The heart-beat of the game is at school and club level and we salute every effort to support the club game.  We believe that the next Makhaya Ntini, Thami Tsolekile or Temba Bavuma can emerge from one of these clubs, thanks to the investment of Sport 4 Kids,” said Beresford Williams, president of the WPCA.

Lutando Mvenya from Delft Cricket Club said he is grateful to WPCA for supporting township cricket and for the strategy to support black cricket. “This is the proof of what the WPCA is doing for the Black community.”

“I would like to express my heartfelt praise to WPCA and Sport 4 Kids for the equipment they have given us today,” said Sibulele Mnqeta of Mandalay Cricket Club. “It is going to help us at the club and it will go a long way in sustaining the club’s aspirations towards the 2015/16-season.”

Iconic PPC and Newlands Cricket Ground join forces to produce a nation of winners

PPC Ltd announced the company’s naming rights partnership with Newlands Cricket Ground at the stadium today. This momentous occasion sees PPC, leading supplier of cement in Southern Africa, join forces with iconic brand, Newlands, one of the world’s most prestigious venues and a stronghold of South African cricket, to rename the stadium “PPC Newlands”.

Darryll Castle, CEO of PPC Ltd, expressed the company’s excitement at becoming part of the Western Province Cricket family. “We’re exceptionally proud to be creating a new moment in history for these two champion brands and are looking forward to adding real value to the sport, the community and, ultimately, the country through this new legacy partnership with the Western Province Cricket Association.”
That is not only because of the commercial value of this partnership. It is also because the values that underpin the PPC-success are so similar to the philosophy that has been a key to the Western Province Cricket Association’s (WPCA) approach.

PPC and Newlands have become synonymous with excellence.

The largest cement producer in South Africa, PPC is already producing eight and half million tons per annum. The company wants to continue to set the standard in the industry with a committed focus on innovation and sustainability.
Newlands has become a South African fortress, where the Proteas have won 11 out of their previous 16 tests, and nine of their last 11 One Day Internationals.

Some of South Africa’s greatest-ever players have proudly plied their trade under the oaks, with Table Mountain as a back-drop.

These Newlands greats have included Jacques Kallis, Hashim Amla, Dale Steyn, JP Duminy, Graeme Smith, Mark Boucher, Gary Kirsten, Herschelle Gibbs, Charl Langeveldt, Vernon Philander, Ashwell Prince and Paul Adams.
The Cape Cobras have hosted the Momentum One-Day Cup final at Newlands in three of the past four seasons. They lifted the trophy in 2011/2012 and shared the spoils in 2012/2013 and 2013/2014.

From 2010 to 2014, Western Province, Boland and the Cape Cobras won 61 % of all the competitions they entered in 57 attempts.

In 2014, Western Province Cricket has produced four South African Schools’ players, four South African u.19-players, three SA u.19 women’s players and three SA u.17-players.

The past 18 months have seen Beuran Hendricks, Dane Piedt and Stiaan van Zyl added to the national ranks alongside proudly Cape Cobra-stars for the Proteas in Amla, Philander, Steyn and Duminy.

Both industry leaders, WPCA and PPC, are committed to growth.

PPC has embraced the importance of operating in emerging markets, where 70% of the world’s cement is produced. In fact, the company has stated it as a goal to generate 40% of its revenue from the rest of the continent by 2017.
Newlands, in accordance with a new stadium income-generating model implemented by Cricket South Africa, will host 18 internationals within the next four years.

This includes the New Year’s Sunfoil Series test against England in 2016, a Momentum One-Day International against the same foes on 14th February and two KFC T20 Internationals in February and March against England and Australia.
WPCA has underlined the importance of extending its footprint to nurture the growth of cricket amongst black South Africans, as well as to accelerate the production of future stars of South Africa in the townships.

A new Newlands Cricket High School started in January at the iconic ground and is set to produce 50 black grade 12 learners of provincial cricketing quality within four years.

Sustaining our youth and provincial amateur cricket at a level where it can be a national role model and active feeder for Western Province, the Cobras and national teams, form part of the medium-term goals of the Cobras.

Both PPC and Newlands are focused on customer-care.

The customers are the reason for PPC’s existence and its efforts are focused on good relationships, understanding and meeting their needs consistently.

The company is seen by its stakeholders as caring and adding value, and as long-term contributors; not short-term takers.

Newlands, rated by many to be the most picturesque test cricket venue in the world, is synonymous with a fantastic atmosphere and has consistently attracted some of the largest domestic crowds at both ODIs and Test cricket.
It hosted both the opening ceremony and the opening match of the 2003 Cricket World Cup.

The WPCA is keen to add to the fans’ cricketing experience as redevelopment plans of Newlands are underway. This will involve the transformation of suites to mixed-use facilities, including a cricket museum, offices and cafes.

PPC and Newlands Cricket Ground are committed to build a nation of winners.

PPC has been associated with sporting codes like soccer, rugby and cricket, while Newlands has hosted the national team and the Cape Cobras.

The two giants, PPC and WPCA, share the same commitment: to build prosperity, excellent values and a South African nation of champions.

A Flying Start For Vice Captain Hamza

$

Off-season hard work is already paying off for 20 year old Zubayr Hamza. The right hand batter came in when his side needed him the most after they lost four wickets in 17.3 overs for 70 runs on Day 1 of their First Class Provincial Sunfoil 3-Day Cup match against Northern Cape (NC) at Diamond Oval in Kimberley on Thursday, 08 October 2015. Their first game for the 2015/16 season.

Western Province (WP) won the toss and elected to bat first.

Fast bowler Jan Frylinck took his first wicket when he dismissed opener Matthew Kleinveldt (9) in the 8th over and further dismissed WP captain Pieter Malan (25) in the 12 over.

Hamza came in and showed very little respect for NC bowlers scoring a solid 156 runs in 179 balls (23 fours and 5 sixes) with a strike rate of 87.15 before falling into the hands of medium bowler, Paul Kruger. He and Jason Smith (77) constructed a 295-run fifth wicket partnership to take their side past the 290 mark.

George Linde was unbeaten on 52 runs off 50 balls when Captain Pieter Malan called for a declaration of innings with the score on 367 for 7 in 85 overs in the first innings.

With the ball still new, Pieter Malan’s strategic move to bring off-breaker Dane Piedt in the fifth over of NC’s innings paid off as the spinner dismissed opener Letlotlo Sesele for 16 in the second ball of his first over before the umpires called for stumps two overs later.

At close of play, NC are 29 for 1 in seven overs. They trail by 338 runs with 9 wickets in the 1st innings.

Teams
WP: Matthew Kleinveldt, Pieter Malan (cpt & w/k), Lesiba Ngoepe, Zubayr Hamza, Sybrandt Engelbrecht, Jason Smith, George Linde, Brandon Young, Dane Piedt, Brian Shushu, Mpilo Njoloza.

NC: Letlotlo Sesele, Janse van Rensburg, Warren Bell, Aubrey Swanepoel (cpt), Giovanni Joseph, Patrick Kruger, Zakir Kathrada (w/k), Jandre Coetzee, Jan Frylinck, Kagiso Mohale, Mbulelo Budaza.
