Brian Shushu and Brandon Young took 4/29 and 4/36 respectively to restrict hosts Northern Cape (NC) to 167 all out in 43.3 overs on Day 2 of their Sunfoil 3-Day Cup fixture in Kimberly. The home side lost their second wicket in the seventh over of the day and another one two overs later both to Brandon Young.
At one stage NC were 70 for 8. Jan Frylinck’s half century and his 83-run ninth wicket partnership with Kagiso Mohale (41) took their side past 150.
Western Province (WP) came into the second innings with a 200-run lead. Matthew Kleinveldt and Pieter Malan lead from the front with a 76-run opening partnership. It was Aubrey Swanepoel who gave NC the breakthrough when he had Kleinveldt caught behind for 25 runs. Malan went on to score his first century for the season. The team added 191 runs to their first innings lead and called for another declaration of innings in 52.2 overs.
Left-arm orthodox, George Linde ensured that NC finishes the day with a wicket down when he had Janse Van Rensburg trapped leg before wicket for 15 runs in the eighth over of their second innings.
At close of play NC are 52/1 in 12.3 overs. They require another 340 runs to win.
